It’s one of those great movies which had everything which would not work for me but I thought may be it’d but it didn’t. Not only for the action scenes but even otherwise the mood of the ship was superbly captured. Sound design was terrific and so were the lighting. The film straight away would qualify for awards in sound and light effects. Then with flame throwers and AK 47 they make a fight and one lucky lady escapes. We of course have a moralistic guy, one black guy, one funny guy, one irritating lady etc.

But thanks to the cornflakes the most iconic scene of the movie happens. It’d have preferred a bacon sandwich but unluckily for our guys they don’t have them on space ship. Then a lot of buttons, funny screensavers and bam! They get banged somewhere and one gets stuck with a starfish (oh no, an alien) which feeds him oxygen, later gets into him and gets out of him (courtesy bad cornflakes). Just know that they’re up there somewhere. The characters in ‘Alien’ are bored to death space scientists who take on a ‘Commercial Space tug’, if you know what that is. A simple trick which the directors nowadays fail to do.

He used a typical ‘monster’ film template where the ‘monsters’ aren’t shown in full so easily. Makes us strain our eyes to see the creature in full. Instead he makes great use of lighting by only showing parts of it, and keeps us intrigued. It’s the same here too but Ridley Scott being a brilliant guy doesn’t keep on showing us the creature. Don’t know who first put the idea that Aliens must have a face like that. Most of the Alien, Predator or Alien vs Predator movies ends up focusing just on ‘what happens’ rather than ‘how happens’ mostly, eventually becoming an action movie with ugly cockroachy creatures. Et tu Robot! Even his standalone head could show so much villainy.

What scene I loved more was Ash’s (Ian Holm) transformation scene which was lovely. As I knew that scene, I wasn’t surprised much but enjoyed it as much as I watched it in a snippet before. In a way its jump scare but it’s carefully built up.

But here I wish it was done with quicker and was like, “come on tear the stomach and splash up some blood…”Īnyone who was watching the movie without knowing that scene would find the scene brilliant. A constant source of guilt which then transforms to happiness which then transforms to satisfaction. I didn’t find the need to observe details like in the case of ‘Space Odyssey’ or a ‘Stalker’ or a ‘Werckmeister Harmonies’ where I’d be carefully scrutinizing which side my eye balls are going, where am I missing the details, what’s there I didn’t get. That moment which I used to clean my keyboard, dust the monitor, keep the towel in proper place etc. A good ten minutes to show around the space ship. Alien takes its own sweet time to establish.

One who’s a fan of Tamil dubbed – Vijay TV – Arnold movie can’t truly enjoy this movie. Seeing how much the movie was celebrated I finally watched it. I had to watch this as it was not only there in the top list of sci-fi movies but was also there in list of any category of movies. But I didn’t watch this because of the sci-fi element. As it was there in the list of best sci-fi’s of almost everyone.
